COHS has been helping to equip school children with life-saving skills.

Dr Nicola Dann, founder and director of Commercial Occupational Health Services (COHS), has been giving her time to educate young people.

She aimed to equip youngsters with the necessary skills and knowledge to confidently respond during an emergency situation.

Working on a Resusci Anne mannequin, year five and six students in Kirklees were taught how to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and given the opportunity to use an automatic external defibrillator. They also learned how to put someone in a recovery position.

Children practised taking blood pressure, monitoring oxygen levels and using a stethoscope to listen to each other’s heartbeats and breathing.

During the interactive session, children filled balloons with 70 millilitres of fluid to showcase the amount of blood pumped by the heart with each beat.

Dr Dann said: “After the session the children were confident in their ability to perform CPR and use a defibrillator during an emergency. With this knowledge and skill they have the potential to save a life.”

Thank you notes from the children included, “I really enjoyed learning how to use the blood pressure equipment” and “I found the defibrillator lesson very interesting and the most useful.” Another said, “I enjoyed learning how to save a person’s life using CPR.”
